So, I’m waiting in the que at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store in Glen Allen, VA (Richmond suburb). Angela’s laptop is having some issues syncing with her Palm Tungsten. We don’t know who the culprit is: Tiger, PalmOS, bluetooth, iSync, MissingSync, etc. Hopefully, the people in the bright green “Student Union” t‑shirts can help. My fingers will remain crossed.
Yes, by the way, today is a day of errands. Fortunately, at least one has me hanging out in a toy store (Apple). Next I’m off to CompUSA Circuit City for some gadgetry. If I can work in the Home Depot, I’ll be having a pretty cool errand day.
Overheard at the Apple Store while typing this:
Girl: “So, uh, do you have one of these types of computers? (points to a sleek new iMac)”
Guy: “No, we have a Windows Operational System.”
So, do you think the folks at Apple think of it as a Windows Non-OS, then?
How is the Palm with OS X (when it works)? I’ve got a very old Handspring Visor (the first one they came out with) w/2mb that I’m thinking of starting to use again if it’ll sync with Address Book and iCal.
Angela’s Palm Tungsten is really very cool. Great screen, integrated bluetooth and an SD slot. For contacts and iCal syncing, it works great with just iSync in Tiger. She has a little Bluetooth USB dongle for that which works nicely, too. However, iSync really seems to be for phones and PDA’s which don’t do use any other special programs. She has a program called The Missing Sync, which does allow for transferring programs to the Palm (or Pocket PC). She uses a relatively large handheld database program which won’t transfer as of yet, but we think we may have stumbled across the problem though: a required Palm OS update for large files.
Angela used one of those old Handspring Visor’s as well, with a CF card adapter which drained the battery in about 30 minutes. It was virtually worthless. She then moved two a Pocket PC and she has owned a iPaq and a Dell Axim. They were both nice, but underpowered. The new Dell’s are really incredible for the price. This newest Palm is great, but is still just a PDA with a really nice screen. For most folks who are looking for a all-around device, I still think the Treo’s are cool. Plus, it’s named after you.
Dongle… Heh heh.
I’ve been drooling over the new Dell’s. Of course I’m not looking at getting a mac anytime soon (of an Axim for that matter), but Thanks for the info.
Just for you Zane, I put a link to the word “dongle” in my comment above. Do you mean drooling over the new Dell handhelds? They’re awesome. They make some nice computers as well (I’m typing on a two-year old Dell right now). I don’t know if I’d go drooling over any of them, except maybe their gaming rigs.
So I have now learned that I was actually drooling over the homemade Thai Noodles and coconut chicken dish I was eating at the time I was looking at the Axims. So you are correct they may not be drool worthy, but they are very nice.
